The Budgiedome Annals

photos

Camp Früvous/Camp LoriSteve debuts in Upper Camping, behind the lone tree and next to the Front Porch.

July 2000: FRFF
Debut of the Budgiedome!

We (Steve and Lori) gave it a few test runs in our back yard first, to figure out assembly and make sure we weren't forgetting anything major.

A principal qualification was met when the entire structure, along with camping gear and 3 people, fit into or on top of our minivan.

We were amused by how the PVC piping on the roof made it look like we were carrying a rocket launcher.

The structure took most of the afternoon for 4 people to assemble, with a few others chipping in their efforts at times. With subsequent practice, we have reduced this time to around 1 hour, and in a pinch it can be set up by Steve and a couple of teenagers.

Neal Shankman provided a solar shower.

A big thanks goes to Russell Wolff for inviting people to play at the Budgiedome.

Performances:

We got a shout-out from Moxy Früvous on mainstage:

Camp Fruvous is their name
Camp Fruvous, a little insane
Camp Fruvous, they're out in the fields
Camp Fruvous, SWARMING THE NIELDS!!!

July 2001: FRFF

Lori and Steve added the shower with propane-fueled water-heater, shower enclosure, a two-person folding camp couch, and air chair. Other people brought camp couches, so the seating situation improved.

*Butch Ross got a gig as a result of this Budgiedome performance!

Many additions were made to the Budgiedome, including:

  • Large Budgiedome sign near upper camp road loop, pointing the way.
  • Beacon lights at night.
  • Flagpole with Camp LoriSteve flag (from 1999 Camp Früvous) and Canadian flag, inspiring a daily flag raising ceremony.
  • Recorded Budgiedome sessions for the amateurs.

July 2003: FRFF

Budgiedome sign was moved in front of 'Dome, smaller temporary signs added on camp road loop.

Introduction of late-night schedule at the 'Dome, starting once the main stage acts have ended for the night.
  • Wednesday night - Informal jam with whomever shows up early for the festival

  • Thursday night - All-out jam until 2-2:30 AM, then a quiet jam for rest of night

  • Friday night - Featured performer night and Camp Fruvous open mic.

  • Saturday night - Pro night - All wandering minstrels are welcome to perform a few songs at the 'Dome, as late as they feel like showing up.

Performances:

May 2004:
Susquehanna Music and Arts Festival (SMAF)

The 'Dome made its first trip to a festival other than FRFF, and kept us shielded from the elements on a very chilly Saturday night while we made hot drinks before heading to a Song Circle in one of the resort cabins, which was even warmer.

July 2004: FRFF

Falcon Ridge '04 was marked by unpredictable and violent weather. Amid tornado reports, buffeting wind gusts took down the shower enclosure the Tuesday before the festival started, but Steve retrieved it (from the vendor area near Main Stage) and put it back together. On Friday there were drenching rains and high winds, and it took several of us pulling on the guide ropes to keep the 'Dome tarp from blowing away, while others kept rainwater funnelling off the sags in the "roof" and away from the sheltered area. It survived better than many people's tents, and was able to host performances that night in relatively dry and warm conditions.

Performances:

Thursday night:

amateur jamming and singalong until approximately 2:30 am

Friday night:
  • The Kennedys
  • followed by an open mic including comedy, bellydance, and lots of music.
